**PARCC Mathematics Workshops**

#### In-person, On-site Professional Development Workshops

- PARCC’s Type I items in mathematics assess students’ abilities in application and fluency. Each Type I item is designed with a particular Standards standard and mathematical practice in mind. This workshop reviews the grade-level Standards addressed and provides activities and resources participants can use directly in their classrooms. Districts and schools can select from a variety of grade-level configurations (3-5, 3-8, 6-8, 6-11, and HS). Materials and activities are tailored to address students’ grade levels.

- The Standards in Mathematics require evidence of reasoning to ensure conceptual understanding of the concepts taught in each grade level. Type II tasks on the Performance Based Assessment call for written arguments/justifications, critiques of reasoning and precision in mathematical statements. A thorough discussion of the specificity of the Standards will take place with support documents provided. Teaching reasoning in mathematics will require instructional changes in the classroom. Participants will experience a variety of instructional strategies for teaching reasoning through student-centered activities, along with effective questioning techniques. Task specific rubrics will be modeled and discussed. A work session will be provided for participants to create Type II items. Participants are encouraged to bring a classroom resource to use during the work session. Templates for all activities and support docs will be provided.

- Participants in the full day PARCC mathematics workshops will explore the Standards through small group discussions and student-centered activities. These discussions and activities will emphasize the major test clusters and provide a clear understanding of how each will be assessed on PARCC’s Performance Assessments and End-of-Year Tests. Workshop attendees will receive lesson plans and resources to take back to their classrooms to prepare their students for the challenges PARCC presents.

- The PARCC test results present novel challenges for administrative teams, who must determine how to effectively use the data to inform instruction. This workshop begins with a brief overview of the test results: test scale, meaning and implications of averages, and score comparisons. Next, the presenter explains how specific items fall into the testing categories and how item types are scored. In the second half of the workshop, the presenter reviews the major, supporting, and additional Standards that are assessed on each grade level. Participants receive resources, lesson plans and activities they can use to help students master all three item types on the PARCC mathematics tests.

- During this workshop, participants will analyze a selected math standard and design a PARCC-like test that measures understanding as specified in the standard. Participants will construct PARCC-like Type I, II, and III items and a corresponding answer key with rubrics. The participant will design the test blueprint, identifying when, where, why and how the test will be used in the curriculum.

- Once instructors have a thorough understanding of PARCC’s Type I, II and III items, they should transition to the most effective and targeted instructional approaches possible. This workshop begins with an overview of the Standards and item types in relation to the possible points for each type. Next, the presenter will suggest specific activities and lessons for each of PARCC’s constructs. Lastly, the presenter and participants will discuss expected challenges and suggestions for how to provide intervention strategies for each item and student need.

- The best form of test preparation is when it is integrated into daily instruction. This workshop provides the concepts and materials that instructors need in order to provide seamless Standards-based instruction that also prepares students to perform at their personal best on PARCC. Concepts presented during this workshop include: PARCC instructional resources, using PARCC rubrics, constructing PARCC items, using companion text and creating PARCC “Do Now’s”. Instructors will leave the workshop with a large repertoire of ideas and activities that they can employ in the class the very next day.
