Incorporating Student Self-Assessment into Your Grading Practices

Participants will be able to effectively incorporate authentic self-assessment practices into their teaching by utilizing metacognitive strategies, student-friendly rubrics, and self-reflection tools to enhance student learning and self-awareness.

This workshop provides an overview of authentic self-assessment practices. Participants will consider the what, why, and how of authentic self-assessment. Next, the presenter will illustrate the key differences between self- assessment and self-grading.  Several authentic assessment tools and strategies will be presented, which include ways to incorporate metacognition, utilizing student-friendly rubrics, various self reflection materials, and strategies for using success criteria to monitor learning.  The workshop will end with ways participants can plan to incorporate self-assessments, as well as considering how this practice will be taught to students and implemented.
