Supporting Marginalized Populations and Increasing Female Participation in CTE Classes

Participants will gain strategies to support and empower marginalized populations by addressing academic proficiency, student trauma, and effective study habits, while also fostering gender equity in CTE courses through mentorship, stereotype reduction, female role models, and parent engagement.

This workshop is designed to help educators create more inclusive and equitable Career and Technical Education (CTE) classrooms. Participants explore strategies to encourage and support marginalized populations—including females, minority groups, and Black students—by addressing barriers related to proficiency, trauma, and effective study habits. The session emphasizes gender equity in CTE by sharing approaches such as mentorship programs, stereotype reduction, and building strong female role models. Teachers also learn how to engage families and communities as partners in supporting underrepresented students’ success in CTE pathways.

Underlying Needs for Stronger Family-School Partnerships

  • Underrepresentation of females and marginalized populations in CTE programs.
  • Academic and social barriers such as trauma, lack of proficiency, and ineffective study habits that hinder success.
  • Persistent stereotypes and structural inequities that discourage female participation and broader inclusivity in CTE.

This workshop helped me better understand the challenges families face and gave me practical strategies to strengthen communication and engagement. I now feel more confident in building supportive partnerships with families to improve student success.
