The Science of Reading: Word Decoding and Phonics

Participants will gain comprehensive insights into explicit, systematic phonics instruction, mastering the progression of phonics skills, understanding the six syllable types, and effectively integrating decodable texts into daily instruction.

Phonics and decoding are closely intertwined. Research confirms that strong decoding skills help students sound out unfamiliar words, opening up new levels of reading and learning. In this workshop, participants will explore what explicit, systematic phonics instruction is and looks like in classrooms. Participants will be introduced to the phonics skills progression, learn about the six syllable types, and explore the phonics and word recognition foundational standards. Participants will walk away with a thorough understanding of decodable texts and explore ways to embed these texts into everyday instruction.
